Reverse Logistics Management

Supply Chain and Logistics

What is Reverse Logistics?

Reverse logistics is essentially just what it states: the reversal of goods through organized logistics back to their point of origin. However, this becomes more complex as different items are returned for varying reasons. For example, reverse logistic processes for a product recall differ from the return of an unwanted product. With a recall, processes for alerting customers and then receiving back recalled products have to be put in place; batches of recalled products still in warehouses have to be checked, segregated, and possibly sent to another location. For products returned for repair, end-of-life support, or for ITAD (IT Asset Disposition) separate reverse logistic systems will ensure correct processing. To maintain efficiency and minimize costs these logistics require skilled managers, organized systems and facilities.

An example of reverse logistics could be the return of a product to the manufacturer due to a recall, or the return of a faulty item. Reverse logistics can also include returns due to customer dissatisfaction or even end-of-life returns for product recycling or responsible disposal.
