PRIDE Industries (PRIDE), a nonprofit social enterprise providing service needs to businesses and government agencies nationwide while creating meaningful jobs for people with disabilities, today announced that Jeff Dern was named Sacramento Business Journal’s 2017 CFO of the Year, in the Nonprofit category.

 

“Jeff plays a significant role at PRIDE. His financial acumen coupled with his leadership abilities touch all aspects of PRIDE,” said Michael Ziegler, President and CEO of PRIDE Industries. “The recognition is well deserved. Jeff has a savvy business mind, coupled with a passion for PRIDE’s mission to create jobs for people with disabilities — a dynamic combination.”

 

As PRIDE’s CFO, Dern is responsible for all accounting and financial matters for the organization, along with Legal, Risk Management, Compliance and Internal Audit functions. Dern plays a key role on PRIDE’s executive team contributing to the company’s strategic direction and advancing the social mission to create jobs for people with disabilities.

Dern has more than 18 years of domestic and international experience in accounting, finance and audit roles. With an extensive background in corporate finance, treasury, financial planning and analysis, regulatory reporting, board relations, and strategic planning, Dern joined PRIDE in 2008 as a Controller. In 2014, he was promoted to VP of Finance. In 2016, he was promoted to Chief Financial Officer of PRIDE Industries.

PRIDE Industries was named a 2017 Safer Choice Partner of the Year Award Winner for its outstanding achievement in the manufacturing and use of its PRIDEClean® products. This marks the second-year PRIDE Industries has won the award. PRIDE Industries is among 33 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award winners announced May 5, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 2017.

 

The Safer Choice program, formerly known as the Design for the Environment (DfE) Safer Product Labeling Program, was developed in 1997 and draws upon chemical and environmental expertise from across EPA. Safer Choice uses the technical tools and expertise of EPA’s New Chemicals Program to evaluate the environmental and human health impacts of every chemical ingredient in a product, allowing only the safest ingredients in labeled products.

 

“As a company that embraces sustainability, our focus was to produce products that were not only better for the environment, but could provide a commercial strength, budget-friendly alternative to our customers and consumers who want to ‘go-green’ efficiently – without sacrificing quality,” said Al Ahlm, PRIDEClean® Product Manager. “PRIDEClean® custom-blended formulas were developed following the stringent EPA’s Safer Choice standards for products that are safer for human health and protect the environment. ROSEVILLE – Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) today announced it philanthropically invested $35,000 in PRIDE Industries, Roseville, CA. The funds will allow the nonprofit to provide a full-service employment program that works with individuals with disabilities to achieve his/her career goal of economic independence.  Overall, Wells Fargo awarded $2.3 million in grants to 59 nonprofit organizations throughout California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. All grantees are from communities designated as having the highest levels of unemployment, as measured by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Meet Sam, an industrious young man who gained employment and continues to receive job coaching through PRIDE’s Employment Services Program.

 

Sam received services at Modesto PRIDE that prepared him for employment at Grocery Outlet. Sam shares “I learned about when to ask customers if they need help taking their groceries out to their car…and the important duties of the job like bagging and cart runs.  I believe it helped me get the job because I believe that taking the initiative helped a lot.”  Sam has had an impact on his co-workers and work that has led to a culture of acceptance.  In fact, his co-workers have told us that people in the community come to Grocery Outlet just to see Sam!

In order to strengthen communities challenged by the highest levels of unemployment, Wells Fargo awarded $2.3 million to 59 nonprofits across California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Thirty-five of the funded nonprofits are from urban communities and 24 are from rural markets. The organizations offer people advancement opportunities by providing services focused on small- and micro-business development, workforce development and job creation. In total the 59 grants are expected to make a community in local communities (as reported by grant recipients):

 

  • 16,000 low-to-moderate income individuals to be served
  • 11,000 small- and micro-business owners to receive business planning support
  • 8,900 individuals to receive employment and job training
  • 14,500 expected job placements/jobs created

ROSEVILLE – Frank Olivas, Safety Director for PRIDE Industries, has been named the 2015 Safety Professional of the Year (SPOTY) by J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc., a leading safety, and regulatory compliance consulting firm. The award was presented Thursday, September 10, 2015, at J.J. Keller corporate headquarters in Neenah, WI recognizing industry professionals who have demonstrated unique, engaging and effective approaches to safety programs.

 

Olivas was selected from nearly one hundred other safety professionals for his comprehensive safety program and innovative approach to employee training and mentoring. Working on PRIDE Industries’ facilities contract at Fort Bliss, TX, Olivas and his safety team reduced the accident rate (number of OHSA recordable injuries x 200,000/man hours worked) to 1.6, well below the industry average of 3.9.  Supporting PRIDE’s unique workforce, Olivas incorporates bilingual and American Sign Language training for some 80 hearing-impaired employees. “We don’t have a safety program, we have a safety process,” said Olivas. “It is ongoing and not intended to end.”
