Awarded Best of the Best by U.S. Veterans Magazine

Roseville, Calif. — PRIDE Industries has been named among the nation’s Best of the Best Top Veteran-Friendly Companies by U.S. Veterans Magazine (USVM). With an eye on veteran employment, the publication’s annual review evaluates the nation’s employers, initiatives, government agencies, and educational institutions.

“We strive to encourage other companies to follow the lead and ultimately create a more diverse workforce,” said Mona Lisa Faris, President and Publisher at USVM. To this end, the evaluation list highlights transitioning service members, disabled veterans, spouses, and veteran business owners. It also cites business and supplier opportunities for veterans—both in corporate America and the federal government.

USVM polled more than 375 Fortune 1000 companies for this year’s Best of the Best evaluations. The goal is to bring the latest information and guidance to readers and encourage active outreach and diversity policies among corporations and government agencies. These non-biased assessments are valuable resources for jobseekers, business owners, students, consumers, senior management, business associations, employment agencies and consumer groups.

“This is yet another strong validation of PRIDE Industries’ steadfast commitment to gainfully employ veterans who have so faithfully served our nation with distinction and honor,” said Major General (Retired) Casey Blake, Chief Operating Officer at PRIDE Industries. “We are pleased to achieve this recognition and remain ever vigilant in our resolve to network with community partners to recruit veterans.”

PRIDE Industries recognizes that the experience veterans gain serving our country makes them valuable employees. The company has an employee helpline [(844) I-AM-ABLE] and a dedicated Veterans Liaison who provides job readiness, coaching, and employment placement assistance to veterans. Veterans are also eligible for paid internships, mentoring and training programs, and membership in PRIDE Industries’ Veteran Employee Resource Group (ERG). Using tools like PRIDE Industries’ Military Skills Translator, veterans can match a civilian career to their skills and talent. Their Inclusive Talent Solutions enables companies across the nation to hire veterans as well.

“We appreciate all the men and women who bravely served our country,” said Frank Goehringer, Veterans Liaison at PRIDE Industries. “It is our honor to provide our veteran heroes, active duty spouses, the guard and reserve soldiers and families with employment opportunities. Thank you to U.S. Veterans Magazine and to all of our veteran referral partners.”

Nonprofit Named a VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer Honoree

Roseville, Calif. — PRIDE Industries has been honored as a VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer. This inaugural award recognizes top companies that hire veterans and are committed to recruiting, retaining, developing, and supporting veterans and others in the military community.

“PRIDE Industries has established itself as one of the nation’s top veteran employers, with its status as a VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer,” said George Altman, managing director of VETS Indexes. “Their commitment to not just hiring veterans, but then helping them to develop into integral and high-ranking employees, is outstanding and deserves recognition.”

VETS Indexes, a firm dedicated to promoting veteran employment, created the award to both recognize and promote innovation in veteran hiring. They chose this year’s award recipients based on their performance in five key areas: veteran hiring and recruiting, veteran development and retention, inclusive policies and culture, support for Guard and Reserve members, and military spouse support.

A 501(c)(3) social enterprise, PRIDE Industries is dedicated to creating employment for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment, including military veterans.

“PRIDE Industries continues to strengthen our longstanding relationship with veterans and is profoundly appreciative of this recognition,” said Major General (Retired) Casey Blake, Chief Operating Officer at PRIDE Industries. “It further validates our unwavering commitment to employing and serving the men and women who have served our country.”

PRIDE Industries offers U.S. veterans a welcoming and supportive environment as they work to reach their career goals. The organization has long recruited veterans, and recently launched a Military Translator tool on its website to help veterans identify job opportunities at the company. The Military Translator is just one of multiple services offered by PRIDE Industries, which also provides veterans with paid internships, mentoring programs, a veteran referral bonus program, and a Veteran Employee Resource Group (ERG). The company currently employs hundreds of veterans in all areas of the company and has provided support and services to thousands more.

“PRIDE Industries is proud to be recognized as a 3 Star Employer by VETS Indexes,” said Frank Goehringer, Veterans Liaison at PRIDE Industries. “This award really belongs to the veterans, disabled veterans, and their spouses. These dedicated men and women not only volunteered to serve our country, but now continue to contribute by working in the civilian sector of our economy. Veterans truly do represent one of our nation’s richest talent pools.”

More than 100 organizations submitted completed surveys to participate in the VETS Indexes Employer award process. These included large and small companies, government agencies and departments, and nonprofit groups. Of the organizations who participated in the award process, PRIDE Industries was one of only 20 to receive the VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer recognition.

Roseville, Calif. — Paula Petersen, Vice President of Procurement for PRIDE Industries, has been honored with a “Women in Supply Chain” award by Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine. The award recognizes the achievements of top women executives in the profession.

The publication’s award celebrates not just professional accomplishments, but also the mentorship roles that recipients have undertaken. The award was launched just this year, and Petersen is among the first executives to be recognized for her professional accomplishments.

“Paula has been a tremendous asset in supporting PRIDE’s growth,” said Jeff Dern, President and CEO of PRIDE. “Her procurement leadership ensures that we are good stewards of our resources, able to invest as much as possible into our mission to create jobs for people with disabilities.”

PRIDE is a leading provider of manufacturing and logistics, integrated facilities management, custodial and environmental, energy, and recruitment services. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit social enterprise, the company is also the nation’s leading employer of people with disabilities and barriers to employment.

Paula Petersen joined PRIDE eight years ago. Since then, she has greatly increased efficiency by consolidating the procurement function into one department and automating routine processes. And it’s that team and their shared passion for PRIDE’s mission that Paula credits for her success. She was quick to point out that in many ways, the “Women in Supply Chain” award isn’t hers alone, but reflects on the entire company.

“Everything I do at PRIDE I do as part of a team,” she said. “Everyone is aligned to PRIDE’s mission and the satisfaction of knowing that efficiencies gained directly translate into  employment opportunities for people of all abilities.”

A recent study by the Gartner research firm found that 17% of chief supply chain officers in the U.S. are women—a 6% increase over the last year. Petersen considers this a promising trend.

“When I started in this field 30 years ago, there weren’t many female procurement executives,” she said. “I’m pleased to see that changing.”

PRIDE Industries is a social enterprise delivering business excellence to public and private organizations nationwide.

On a brisk, sunny morning this past May, Don Lucy jogged up several concrete steps, crossed a small plaza, and entered a nondescript office building. He passed through a glass door and walked to where a plastic X had been placed on the lobby floor. A moment later, a receptionist waved him forward. She checked his ID, then directed him to a row of standing lockers—personal belongings weren’t allowed where he was going.

After stowing his watch, keys, and phone, Don pushed his way through another door, stood on another plastic X. When he was called forward, he walked to a large desk where a man sat at a computer. Don had to show his ID again, and remove his face mask so that the man could confirm his identity. Then Don was asked to take off his glasses and place them in a box on the table. He did so, then watched as the man at the table inspected them carefully.

A moment later, Don was allowed to retrieve his glasses, but the intense scrutiny wasn’t over. He was asked to hold his arms out, lift his pants legs above his socks. Don complied with each of these requests, waiting patiently for the man to confirm that he wasn’t carrying any electronic devices. Finally, the man at the table nodded his approval. Don was finally cleared to pass through the third and final door.

Don Lucy, CFM

These kinds of security measures bring to mind images of national intelligence briefings. But Don is not, in fact, a secret agent. He is PRIDE Industries’ General Manager of Commercial Facilities Services for the NorCal Region. And he’d gone to the office building that May morning to take an important test—the Certified Facilities Manager (CFM) Examination.

Not many tests require their takers to undergo such scrutiny, but the CFM exam isn’t just any test. The exam is administered by the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), and it’s demanding. Test-takers must answer 180 questions in just four hours, on topics covering everything from financial risk management to real estate strategies to health and safety issues. IFMA doesn’t disclose the pass rate for the exam, but given that there are only 2,600 CFMs in the world, it can’t be too high.

Don knew the test would be a challenge. So he’d prepared, spending over 100 hours studying and practicing. And the hard work paid off. In early May, he was notified that he had passed.

Don is now one of a handful of credentialed CFMs here at PRIDE, a group that includes his manager, Chris Bunch, who Don credits with encouraging him to take on the challenge.

“When Chris first talked to me about CFM certification, he made it clear he was confident I could do it,” Don said. “That meant a lot to me.”

The knowledge and skills Don gained on his way to becoming a CFM will serve him well in his job as General Manager, a role he undertook this past January. As GM for the NorCal Region, he oversees 21 service contracts worth $33 million. He’s also responsible for the day-to-day operations of nearly 3 million square feet of facility space and leads a team of more than 350 employees. It’s a complex job, but if his performance on the CFM test is any indication, Don is more than up to the task.

So what’s next for the newly minted CFM?

“I’m just glad the test is behind me and that the certification came through,” Don says. “Now I can focus on the reason I did all that learning in the first place—applying best practices to PRIDE’s business lines.”
