Green space is a type of open space, although the terms are sometimes confused. Open spaces are undeveloped outside spaces, and if it is covered or partly covered in trees, grass, etc., it is referred to as green space. However, open spaces also include vacant lots, plazas, and playgrounds which may have little to no green in them. It is unclear what percentage of “green” makes an open space a green space.
According to the EPA open space is defined as: “...any open piece of land that is undeveloped (has no buildings or other built structures) and is accessible to the public.”
How a green space is maintained will depend on its function. Forests and national parks or wildlife areas may require limited maintenance whereas public gardens or grounds surrounding state and government buildings can be high-maintenance green spaces.
