Building Mechanic

Operation and maintenance on HVAC, steam, and ammonia equipment

Building Mechanics work with the facilities maintenance team to provide preventative maintenance and services to the building's HVAC, steam, and ammonia equipment.


Under general supervision, the Building Mechanic will support the maintenance and improvement of industrial services in accordance with the Nestlé Maintenance Strategy, which includes a multi-disciplined approach that proactively maintains/improves the fixed assets and Asset and Maintenance Management (AMM) in order to efficiently manage the asset lifecycle. For this position, candidates should have experience working with ammonia refrigeration, compressed air, hydraulics, and steam generation equipment. The Building Mechanic must also be familiar with multiple building systems, including electrical and other controls, especially as related to the food and/or beverage industry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily operation and maintenance of ammonia refrigeration system

  • Daily operation and maintenance of steam system and boilers

  • Daily operation and maintenance of the HVAC systems

  • Daily inspections performed in accordance with all internal and external standards, regulations, and audits (e.g. ammonia systems, pressure vessels, PSM, RMP, etc.)

  • Compressed air system and compressor operation

  • 120/230/480 electrical

  • General building maintenance

  • CMMS data entry

  • Ensure materials are being issued to work orders, and that meaningful and clear information is available

  • Provide feedback to maintenance staff and management about trends, potential issues, and improvement opportunities

  • Follow plant safety rules, and report incidents and unsafe conditions immediately

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Steam system experience required

  • Ammonia refrigeration training preferred, including any of the following types of training:  

    • RETA (Refrigerating Engineers & Technicians Association)

    • Ciro (Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator)

    • Caro (Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator)

    • IIAR (International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration)

  • Knowledge of and training in the use of diagnostic, preventative, and repair operations, techniques, procedures, tools, and equipment used in trade

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations regarding HVAC repair and maintenance for occupied spaces

  • Ability to communicate effectively and respond to questions and requests

  • Ability to utilize tools and work on machines

  • Ability to perform inventory and order parts in the computer system 

  • 1-2 year of relevant training, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Ability to read, write, perform basic math, and use a computer
