Position Summary:

Under general supervision, the Barista is responsible for expediting coffee-espresso drinks and related food and beverage items; handles food according to HACCP guidelines; is aware of minimum standards for a quality food service operation and interacts with customers and other employees in a friendly and courteous manner.

Typical Duties:

  • Prepares espresso orders for customers and catering using standard measures and recipes.

  • Enters orders accurately into the POS device, accepts cash and charge payments.

  • Required to replenish condiments, beverages, and general supplies while maintaining cleanliness of service area.

  • Responsible for ensuring proper presentation, portion control, and maintenance of appropriate serving temperatures—follows HACCP standard.

  • Maintains sanitation and orderliness of all equipment, supplies and utensils within work area.

  • Ensures proper food preparation by utilizing approved recipes and following prescribed production standards.

  • Keeps display equipment clean and free of debris during meal service as assigned.

  • Cleans equipment and workstation thoroughly before leaving the area for other assignments.

  • Greets customers courteously and interacts in a manner to ensure customer satisfaction. Relays relevant concerns from customers directly to supervisors.

  • Serves customers quickly, efficiently and does not allow back-ups or snags in serving lines.

  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of daily menu items and explains same to customers accurately.

  • Checks to ensure that all display foods are merchandised attractively per standards. Serves food neatly and attractively per standard.

  • Develops a positive working relationship.

  • An advocate of selling techniques by establishing communication, obtaining product knowledge, and assisting in the buying decision.

  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Follow instructions using structured process and procedures.

  • Identify and work with appropriate tools/equipment.

  • Flexible with schedule changes, work duration, and task assignments.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with management, employees, customers, vendors and demonstrate good customer service.

  • Ability to work with and around electrical and mechanical equipment, sharp utensils, slick floors, hot steam and water.

  • Ability to comply with safety programs and practices.

  • Customer service skills that include greeting patrons in a courteous manner; provide professional responses to questions that relate to the operations of business; assist or direct customers to appropriate areas or personnel.

  • Help customers with special needs.

  • Must be able to work mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Education Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED.

Certificates Required:

The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements: Food Handler’s Permit.

Physical Requirements:

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

  • Maneuvering in and around the worksite.

  • Standing and walking.

  • Bending, kneeling, reaching, and stooping.

  • Grasping both small & large objects.

  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

Most work is primarily performed indoors, in a cafeteria setting, with exposure to various background noises which including equipment, customers, and others working.
